The Monk of Salzburg’s extensive work contains one of the first musical versions of the Passion in the German vernacular at the time, which references the text of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus. This text by Nicodemus – a figure in the Gospel of John – was regarded as a “contemporary witness document” about the Passion of Christ at the time and was highly popular.
In our version, we divided the monk’s nine-verse song up into sections, adding instrumental companion pieces as a form of commentary. Rich instrumentation ensures a sonorous experience of this medieval retelling of the Passion story.
